Scott finishes strong but fails to make cut at Detroit River

Scott Martin participated in the final stop of the FLW Tour at Detroit River before heading off to Forrest Wood Cup.

Martin ended day 1 with a total of 5 bass at 13 pounds 3 ounces.   That showing put him in 138 place with the day 1 leader Vic Vatalaro topping out at 21 pounds 11 ounces.

On day 2, Scott was all business when came in with a total of 5 bass weighing 20 pounds 14 ounces.  His combined his 2 day total is 34 pounds 1 ounce…missing the top 10 by just 3 pounds 3 ounces.

He finishes in 32nd place, bringing home $11,000 in winnings.

Scott will stay in Detroit through the weekend when he will meet up with the film crew to shoot a couple of episodes of the Scott Martin Challenge on Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River area.   Scott’s slated opponents for the shows are Ranger and Evinrude Pro Kevin Long and Scott Dobson.

Scott’s Fort Loudoun-Tellico finish from FLWOutdoors.com

When day-three leader Art Ferguson left the door open with a paltry 7-pound, 11-ounce catch today, David Dudley was not the only one who took advantage of it.

National Guard pro Scott Martin of Clewiston, Fla., also crossed Ferguson’s threshold with a 14-pound, 13-ounce catch today to take the runner-up position with a two-day total of 28 pounds, 7 ounces worth $50,000.

Martin began his week shallow, fishing a Spro Little John crankbait around seawalls where he could see shad activity.

But as the water dropped on day two, Martin’s shallow-water program began to wane and he became much more reliant on deep shell mounds on river ledges in Fort Loudoun.

He caught his deepwater fish on two deep-running crankbaits, including a DD-22 and a Brian’s Bees B-18, but he actually found the areas with a football head jig.

“In practice, I kept a heavy football head jig rigged up so I could feel the bottom,” he said. “If the bottom was soft and mushy, I’d move on. But whenever I felt that rubble shelly bottom, I marked it.”

Martin also believes the color and cadence of his deep crankbaits over the shells were key. The shell mounds were 8 to 10 feet and top and he would dredge the bait into the shells hard and fast.

“I normally use chartreuse-blue-back patterns for crankbaits on TVA lakes, but the shad-colored patterns seemed to work much better this week,” Martin said. “Also, I was really cranking the bait fast and making it real erratic, which is one reason I think I caught so many smallmouth on it.”

“I know this sounds crazy,” he added. “But I really believe those smallmouth were spawning on the shell bars in about 8 feet of water. It seemed like the closer the full moon got during practice, the more smallmouth I started catching off those bars.”

June 22, 2008 - Scott Finishes 2nd at Fort Loudoun-Tellico

Scott Martin had his best tournament of the year with a 2nd place finish at Fort Loudoun-Tellico Lakes in Knoxville, TN.

Scott finished with days 3 and 4 total weight of 28-07 lbs, just 1-04 lbs behind tournament winner, David Dudley.

Scotts biggest stringer of the 4 day tournament came on day one with a five bass limit of 20-11 lbs which took the lead for that day.

For his efforts, Scott will be awarded $50,000 2nd place prize, bringing his 2008 total winnings to $65,000.

With one more tournament left to fish before the all-important Forrest Wood Cup, Scott stands in 71st place in points with 592 points.

Scott has already qualified to attend the Forrest Wood Cup this year after competing in the FLW Series event, East/West Fish-Off at Lake Amistad in Texas earlier this year.

Scott’s next FLW Tour stop is July 10-13 at the Detroit River in Detroit, MI.

June 21, 2008 - Martin Holding Strong on Day 3 at Fort Loudoun-Tellico

Story courtesy of FLWOutdoors.com

National Guard pro Scott Martin of Clewiston, Fla., weighed in all brown fish today – some smallmouth, some meanmouth – for 13 pounds, 10 ounces to take third place.

Martin’s shallow bite died today and he was forced to go deep. He is targeting shell mounds in about 14 feet of water to catch his fish.

“I fished shallow for a while this morning, but they dropped the water and I think that killed the shallow bite,” Martin said. “So I went deep and there’s something about those shell mounds on these TVA systems that the smallmouth really love. I’ve caught a smallmouth or two off these shell mounds each day, but today I caught everything I weighed in off those shelly type places.”

To catch his fish, Martin is relying on a two crankbaits on the shell mounds: a DD-22 and a Brian’s Bees B-18.

The Top 10 after day 3 looks like this:

1. Art Ferguson - 19-02 lbs
2. David Dudley - 14-09 lbs
3. Scott Martin - 13-10 lbs
4. Craig Powers - 11-05 lbs
5. Brandon Coulter - 8-09 lbs
6. Jerry Green - 8-07 lbs
7. Andy Montgomery - 8-04 lbs
8. Hank Cherry - 7-13 lbs
9. Andy Morgan 7-08 lbs
10. Ramie Coulson Jr. - 2-08 lbs

June 20, 2008 - Scott Makes The Cut at Fort Loudoun-Tellico

This week Scott is taking part in the Wal-Mart FLW Tour event at Fort Loudon-Tellico Lakes in Knoxville, TN…and it has been a good week for Scottso far. At day one weigh-in, Scott weighed in a hefty totally of 20 pounds 11 ounces, taking away the early lead from David Dudley.

“I think the day off yesterday(Wednesday) was the key to the better bags today,” Martin said about the lakes. “It let the fish settle down and reposition on the right places again; the break did the most good here compared to any other tournament we’ve fished so far this year.”

His leading limit included two big smallmouths.

“I caught two big largemouths and a nice smallmouth early this morning up shallow, which was a huge bonus for me,” he said. “I was mostly looking for bait – shad up around some kind of structure – that’s where the active fish were.”

On Day 2, Scott slipped to 3rd place weighing in 11 pounds 12 ounces, with a 2-day total of 32 pounds 7 ounces. While making the cut for the first time in this year, he trails tournament leader David Dudley by 3 pounds 7 ounces.

Martin continued to bounce back and forth between shallow and deep water today. He caught two of his keepers shallow and three deep.

When he’s shallow, Martin is relying on a Spro Little John crankbait and when he goes deep, he switches to a DD-22.

“What I’m looking for on those deep spots is white bass,” Martin said. “White bass are a big part of the equation. If I can find some bait on a ledge and then I catch a white bass, I get pretty excited because the deep largemouth and smallmouth are working those bait pods with the white bass.”

Check back to ScottMartinChallenge.com for updates as Scott fishes two more days for the $125,000 first place prize.
